PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A nationwide theater program for veterans and military families was launched in Providence on Friday.

U.S. Senator Jack Reed and Governor Lincoln Chafee were among those who helped kick off the Blue Star Theatres program at Trinity Repertory Company.

Blue Star offers free and discounted theater tickets, play writing classes, workshops and community discussions to military families and veterans. The program will also post job opening and casting notices on military bases.

Theaters in 17 states are participating in the program.
