PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - This list will be updated up until Thanksgiving.
The busiest shopping day of the year is just over a week away, and many major chain retailers are planning to open extra early for Black Friday sales, from clothing to electronics. The problem: it's up to each Rhode Island city and town to decide just how early stores can actually open. We decided to check with city and town leaders to see who'd need to apply for a permit or other permission, and who'd decide which stores would get the green light.
Those without a permit run the risk of potentially being shut down by officials.
Cranston
The city clerk's office says stores in Cranston need to get an all-night license in order to open between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. So far, Ocean State Job Lot on Elmwood Avenue and the Walmart on the Johnston line are the only stores to apply.

Walmart-Plainfield Pike: 4 a.m.
Providence
Providence's Board of Licenses makes the decision about letting stores open early. They grant 1-day permissions for early openings (before 5 a.m.).
However, as of Nov. 16, the Board of Licenses told Eyewitness News the only store that had applied for an early opening was Ocean State Job Lot on Reservoir Avenue.
