Big Blue Bug to promote safe driving

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- One of Rhode Island's most beloved icons is teaming with a local non-profit to promote responsible driving during the holiday season.

On Tuesday, the Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation will take part in the annual Big Blue Bug holiday lighting ceremony.

The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation was created in honor of 13-year-old Katie DeCubellis, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver in 1999, along with her best friend's mother, Marsha Bowman.

"We are fortunate to team up with Big Blue Bug to help encourage motorists to drive responsibly and hopefully save lives," said Katie's father, John DeCubellis, in a news release.

The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation is also launching a magnet campaign to raise awareness of responsible driving.  Various local businesses will place magnets on their company vehicles to spread the group's message and help keep roadways safe.

Rhode Island State Police are also participating in the magnet campaign, and will be placing Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation magnets on their cruisers.

The Big Blue Bug holiday lighting ceremony will take place Tuesday, November 20 at 5:15 p.m.
