PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Local anti-violence advocates are reaching out to elementary school students, in an effort to help stop bullying before it begins.

On Friday, street workers from the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence spoke to children at Lauro Elementary School in Providence, and taught them about the dangers of bullying.

The agency usually focuses on working with middle and high school students, but  now they hope to break through to younger children.

"It's definitely important to ge the kids this early because this is where it starts," explains Juan Carter, a street worker for the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence.

"I think if we can reach this crowd and this group of kids in this age group at this time, it will help them as they get better and we won't have as much violence in the city."

Street workers tell us they are active in most Providence schools on a daily basis.
