PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The City of Providence is urging the United States Supreme Court to strike down the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.
Providence joined 276 other local governments, businesses, and law firms in a brief on Wednesday that calls the act unconstitutional.
The nation’s high court will hear arguments next month that challenge the act, which denies federal marriage benefits to same-sex couples whose marriages are allowed under state law.
Legislation to allow same-sex marriage in Rhode Island is currently pending in the general assembly.
