National Grid launches light bulb app

Helps find the best energy efficient bulbs

PROVIDENCE R.I. (WPRI) -- For those who care about the environment, there is a new smartphone app that is not only free, but it allows users to track down the best light bulbs for conserving energy and money.

National Grid is behind the “Light Bulb Finder,” an app that can be downloaded to any iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Android device.

Recently named as the “Best Overall App” by the EPA in its Apps for the Environment Challenge, the app guides users to the best energy-efficient light bulbs. Every light bulb featured on the app includes its financial payback and its impact on the environment.

“Switching to energy-efficient light bulbs is one of the simplest and fastest ways to conserve energy and help protect the environment,” said Terence Sobolewski, Vice President for Sales and Program Operations for National Grid.

National Grid’s app even allows users to connect directly with online bulb stores, which feature more recommendations on energy-efficient lighting for homes.

Shopping for bulbs can be especially challenging today due to the variety of fixtures, degrees of brightness, and measures of color temperatures. But the high prices of lighting leave customers with the greatest challenge - to find the best bulb for their buck.

“Lighting accounts for over 14% of the average home’s electricity bill, so the savings potential is significant,” said Sobolewski.

With just one light bulb change in your home, you can help protect the environment from harmful greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. It only takes a small gesture to make a positive impact, so why not start today?
