PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's education commissioner could be reinstated soon after surgery to remove a brain tumor.
The state Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education is scheduled to discuss at its meeting Thursday ending the medical leave of Deborah Gist and reinstating her as commissioner as of Nov. 26. Acting Commissioner David Abbott would return to his role as deputy commissioner.
Gist underwent surgery in Boston in September to remove a brain tumor that was believed to be benign.
Education Department spokesman Elliot Krieger could not say when Gist would be ready to return as commissioner. He says she hopes to return full-time in January and is already working part-time from home.
