PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Three Southern New England communities were recognized Wednesday as being among the " 100 Best Communities for Young People ."

Providence, Fall River, and New Bedford are among one hundred U.S. cities and towns honored by the America's Promise Alliance , which lists its top priority as ending the nation's high school drop-out crisis.

According to the group's website , the annual competition recognizes communities which make "extraordinary efforts to reduce dropout rates and provide outstanding services and supports to their youth."

Each winning community receives a $2,500 grant that can be used either to fund a local program or service, or to pay for a local event to celebrate the win.

Providence has earned the distinction three times previously, in 2008, 2007, and 2005.

Fall River was among the honorees in 2011 and 2008.

New Bedford had not been previously recognized as part of the competition.
