PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Immigration lawyers and agencies say more than 200 young illegal immigrants in Rhode Island have applied to stay in the United States under an Obama administration program.
The Providence Journal reports that lawyer David L. Yavner says he has handled 20 to 30 applications so far, from Pakistan, India, Cape Verde, Central America and elsewhere. He has turned some people away.
President Barack Obama issued a directive in June that immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children be exempted from deportation and granted work permits if they apply.
Carl Krueger, immigration lawyer at the International Institute of Rhode Island in Providence, the state's largest provider of services to immigrants and refugees, says the number of immigrants applying to stay in the U.S. has been steady.
