Feds nab 11 RIers in massive drug bust

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Eleven people have been detained in Rhode Island as part of a massive drug bust that federal investigators say is linked to Mexican drug cartels.

U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha announced details of the arrests during a news conference Monday morning.

Both the FBI and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency took part in the bust.

Eyewitness News has learned that agents seized more than three kilograms of heroin, 200 grams of cocaine, and $450,000 cash during raids last Thursday and Friday in Providence, Cranston, North Providence, Pawtucket and West Warwick.

They also confiscated five guns, 12 vehicles, and a large amount of high-end jewelry.

In the West Warwick raid alone, four people were arrested and agents seized about $300,000, cocaine, heroin, jewelry, and vehicles.

The arrests were made following an eight-month investigation.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the 11 suspects are linked to a Dominican organization with ties to Mexican drug cartels.

Authorities say the probe is still ongoing.
