EAST PROVIDENCE R.I. (WPRI) – A wild police chase on Saturday ended with two teenagers in police custody.

The chase started after the teens were pulled over in a routine traffic stop on 195 East.

After checking the license plates of the car, police determined the car was stolen.

The teens, an 18-year-old passenger and 17-year-old driver then took off exiting the highway and headed east on Warren Ave in East Providence.

The driver then tried to cut through the Chelo’s restaurant parking lot, and hit another car parked in the parking lot.

Witnesses say the driver of the stolen car jumped the curb and went speeding across the lawn narrowly missing the corner of the building.

The teens took off on foot and were arrested by police.

“The state police came though the parking lot and we went outside and saw two young teenager suspects running through the woods,” said Jarod Chelo, Chelo's Manager.

Both teens were taken into custody and are being held at the Lincoln police barracks.

Cheryl Carpenter of Tiverton, who owns the car that was hit, says she is just thankful that they were not outside when the car sped through or it could have been a completely different scene altogether.

The teens have not yet been charged, but police say the 17-year-old driver did not have a license.

The chase is still under investigation and no injuries are reported.
