PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Police in Providence say they've finally solved a deadly shooting that took place more than three years ago.

Miguel Davis, 22,  pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he shot and killed 22-year-old Dominique Gay at the corner of Baker and Broad Streets in March of 2009.

Gay, the father of a young girl, was walking home with two friends when police say Davis jumped out from behind a dumpster and shot him in the head and back.

They tell us Davis also shot at Gay's friends, but missed, and that he was that he was illegally possessing the gun without a license.

Police say they have substantial evidence that Davis was the shooter, which they have yet to reveal.

Davis could be facing up to two life sentences on the charges. He's currently being held without bail and he's due back in court on Sept. 6.
