PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Pet grooming businesses in Rhode Island are continuing to fight a new sales tax on their services.
Earlier this year state lawmakers voted to impose the state's 7 percent sales tax on pet grooming, taxi fares and items of clothing costing $250 or more despite pleas from business owners that the taxes would hurt business.
The new taxes are set to go into effect Oct. 1.
Pet groomers, taxi cab drivers and clothing store owners will have another chance to voice their displeasure Thursday, when state revenue officials hold a public hearing on the new taxes.
The state's revenue department says it has received some 300 public comments on the new pet grooming tax already.
