NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Suspended North Providence Police Chief Colonel John Whiting will likely be allowed to keep his pension.

According to The Valley Breeze , Pawtucket can't legally take away the pension Whiting earned during the three decades he served on that city's police force.

He was convicted on larceny charges after stealing money from a stripper during a traffic stop in Pawtucket.

Whiting was also found guilty of trying to get a Pawtucket police officer to cover it up.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in September.

The town of North Providence is expected to fire him.
