Infant killed in overnight fire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Fire officials say an infant has died in an early-morning house fire in Providence.

Crews were called to the scene at Bowdoin Street shortly after 3:00 a.m. for a fire in a triple-decker. Those flames were shooting up through the roof and quickly spread to the neighboring home. It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control, and at one point all the crews had to evacuate the building because of the intense flames.

Providence Fire Department officials say that when firefighters arrived, everyone was out of the home except the infant.  Firefighters found her within minutes and removed her from the home but she did not survive. Neighbors tell Eyewitness News that the girl was just 10 months old.

No other residents were hurt in the fire, but ten adults and seven children were displaced.  One firefighter was injured after a fall and checked out at the hospital.

Fire officials say there were no smoke detectors in the home.  State and city fire marshals are investigating to determine the cause of the deadly blaze.
