Mother's Day gift spending up

(WPRI) Did you get your Ma something nice for Mother's Day this weekend? Lots of people already have, apparently, according to the National Retail Federation.

The NRF commissioned a survey to check with consumers and see how much they were going to spend to honor their mothers for the weekend.

On average, the average person figured they'd spend $152.52 on gifts. That's up from the survey results last year, which averaged out to $140.73.

Two-thirds of the gifts, 66.4%, will be flowers. That's expected to total $2.2 billion worth of buds.

Nearly a third, 32.8%, will treat mom to a new blouse or sweater, totaling $1.6 billion.

Is your mom plugged in? 12.7% of respondents plan to give electronics -- tablet computers, digital cameras and such, totaling up to $1.6 billion.

Gift cards and personal services -- like a trip to a day spa -- round out the plans for mothers, according to the survey.

Finally, over half, 54.3%, will also take Mom to dinner or brunch. $3.4 billion is expected to be spent on that.
