PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Rhode Island National Guard airman was awarded two prestigious military honors for his bravery Friday afternoon at the State House.

Technical sergeant Gregory Grutter received the bronze star medal with valor and the purple heart.

The bronze star with valor is the nation's fourth highest combat decoration and is awarded for heroic and meritorious achievement while engaged in a combat action against an enemy of the United States.

In Afghanistan in 2008, Grutter engaged an enemy force with total disregard for his personal safety. His courage under fire saved the lives of more than 100 people.

Grutter is only the 6th Rhode Island National Guardsman to receive this award since the beginning of the global war or terror.
