PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Some 5,500 Rhode Islanders who lost their homes due to improper foreclosure practices by mortgage service providers can now claim some of the $25 billion National Mortgage Settlement.

The Rhode Island Attorney General's office says packets with information to file a claim are in the mail.

The settlement benefits people who lost their home between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2011, and had mortgages serviced by Ally/GMAC, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo.

Eligible borrowers do not need to prove financial harm to receive payment, nor must they give up rights to pursue a lawsuit against their mortgage servicer.

All claim forms must be returned by January, 18, 2013.

Payment checks are expected to be mail by mid 2013.

You can find more information about eligibility and filing a claim on the national mortgage settlement website: http://www.nationalmortgagesettlement.com
