PROVIDENCE R.I. (WPRI) – A local school employee has pleaded guilty to embezzlement.

Yashira Marrero, 27, admitted to embezzling more than $27,000 in federal funds between November 2007 and June 2009, while she worked as an administrative assistant for the 21st Century program at the Met School in Providence.

She admitted to creating fictitious invoices from vendors, then forging endorsement signatures on payment checks and depositing the checks into her own bank account.

Marrero also admitted that she used a travel credit card belonging to the school program to pay for a trip that she and her boyfriend took to Puerto Rico.

Marrero faces a maximum sentence of up to ten years in prison and fines up to $250,000.

She will return to court for sentencing on October 26.
