PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Merck has agreed to pay a $950 million fine in connection with a lawsuit.
The drugmaker is accused of marekting Vioxx as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis before receiving FDA approval to do so.
The company will also plead guilty to misdemeanor charges.
Vioxx was pulled off the market in 2004 after evidence showed that it increaed the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
