Medina faces unauthorized law practice

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Rhode Island lawmaker is facing a complaint that he practiced law without a license.
The Providence Journal reports Wednesday that a Providence man alleges that state Rep. Leo Medina represented himself as an attorney and "conned" him out of tens of thousands of dollars when handling a case involving his stepson.
The man, Miguel Capellan, filed a complaint with the state Supreme Court's Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. The complaint has been forwarded to prosecutors.
Medina pleaded not guilty this spring to charges that he pocketed proceeds from a life insurance policy on a friend's dead daughter. Last year a legal disciplinary panel determined that Medina's former business had promoted itself as a legal office even though Medina has no law license.
Attempts to reach Medina Wednesday were unsuccessful.
