PROVIDENCE, R.I.(AP) - Proponents of Rhode Island's medical marijuana law foresee challenges as police raise concerns over the law's potential for abuse.
This week, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder promised to clarify the Justice Department's position on medical marijuana laws while he visited the state and two men with state-issued marijuana licenses were arrested for drugs.
In April, federal prosecutors warned Rhode Island's plans to open large-scale medical-marijuana dispensaries could lead to prosecutions.
On Friday, State Rep. Scott Slater, a Providence Democrat, said Holder's comments were encouraging and police will continue working on how to deal with medical marijuana licenses.
Medical marijuana supporter Bruce Reilly says fear of police action has made potential licensees reluctant to seek licenses.
