PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- One man has been pronounced dead after a shooting in Providence Thursday night.

Police were called to Academy Avenue just before 8 p.m. after reports of several shots fired in the area. Witnesses tell us that five to seven shots rang out.

Officers scoured the area and found multiple shell casings about 500 feet away on Health Avenue.

Friends of the victim tell us he's a man in his thirties, and was struck on the front porch as he was running inside of a nearby home. They say that several children were inside of the house at the time, but none were injured.

The incident remains under investigation, and police have yet to release further details.
