Medication should not be confused with Theraflu

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Health Departments is warning consumers not to confuse the prescription drug Tamiflu with the over-the-counter medication Theraflu.

Tamiflu can only be prescribed by a doctor and is used to lessen the severity and duration of the flu.  It is most commonly prescribed for those who have underlying medical conditions which put them at higher risk for complications.

Theraflu can be purchased over-the-counter, and may reduce fever and ease body aches and nasal congestion.  But it does not lessen the severity or duration of the flu, and it can contain high doses of acetoaminophen which can be unsafe for children.
