PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former Providence hospital executive has asked a federal appeals court to overturn his corruption convictions.
Robert Urciuoli, the former president and chief executive of Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, was found guilty last year of hiring a state senator to advance the hospital's legislative agenda at the Statehouse.
Urciuoli appealed the verdict Tuesday to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. He argues that the judge gave legally flawed instructions to the jury.
Urciuoli was convicted under the same "honest
services" federal fraud statute now being reviewed by the U.S.
Supreme Court. Federal prosecutors will have an opportunity to
respond to Urciuoli's arguments.
