PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Lifespan has tapped Dr. Timothy J. Babineau as its new president and CEO.

Babineau is currently president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, which are both Lifespan members.

Babineau's appointment, which is expected to begin August 15, 2012, was the result of an eight-month long national search by a 13-member search committee.

“I’m confident that we’ve chosen the best of the best in Dr. Babineau as the next president and CEO of Lifespan," said Scott Laurans, chairman of Lifespan’s board of directors. "Over the past four years, he has demonstrated that he is an intelligent, visionary and adroit leader. He is just that kind of leader we need."

Monday morning's announcement followed a decision by George Vecchione to step down after serving 13 years in the position.

Lifespan Hospitals include Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Bradley Hospital and Newport Hospital.
