PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The Providence City Council passed a law that was drafted to prevent thieves from selling stolen scrap metal.
230 manhole covers were stolen last year, which posed a danger to drivers and pedestrians while costing the city tens of thousands of dollars.
Scrap metal dealers are now prohibited from buying manhole covers without a city certificate approving the sale. They are also required to keep any manhole covers they buy for ten days.
Dealers who purchase any metal statues, fencing, or cemetery items must notify the police and hold the items for ten days.
