PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A federal judge has approved conditions for the display of a prayer banner at a Rhode Island public high school while Cranston officials decide whether to appeal an order requiring its removal.
The terms were approved on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Providence.
The conditions negotiated by both sides say the Cranston High School West prayer banner must remain covered with wood while officials decide whether to fight the removal order.
The banner has been covered since a judge ordered its removal in a lawsuit filed on behalf of student Jessica Ahlquist, who is an atheist.
If the city appeals, the wood must be painted to match the wall color and stay that way during the appeal. If the city doesn't appeal, the banner must be removed.
