Exit 27 from I-95 South reopens early

Exit ramp opens three months ahead of schedule

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced on Wednesday that Exit 27 from I-95 South has reopened three months earlier than originally planned.

The exit was closed in September so the old span of I-95 South could be demolished. Drivers have had to detour using Exit 30 or Exit 25 for the past three months.

“While closing Exit 27 was necessary to complete this phase of the project, we realized this closure needed to be as short as possible for the benefit of nearby businesses,” said RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis.  “We worked with our design team and contractor to accelerate the reopening of this exit to help minimize the impact to downtown businesses. ”

The new ramp on Exit 27 is only temporary, and may be closed short-term in the future to allow for the transition to the permanent ramp.
