PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Many Southern New Englanders woke up on Thursday to find damage to their homes from the previous night’s storm.

If your house or yard was damaged sometimes it is appropriate to call a contractor or your insurance company, but not always.

Insurance experts say to ask yourself the question: Are the repairs easy enough to do it yourself?

If so, make sure they are small repairs and do not repair big jobs like roofs or major structures on your own. If you repair them wrong and have future problems, homeowner’s insurance may not cover that damage.

If the damage is extensive, call your insurance company and even before they come out, document and take pictures of all damage.

If you do need to hire a contractor, make sure they are registered.
