PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A Rhode Island based group is calling for the removal of a cross on public property.
The cross in question is located near 14 Pleasant Valley Parkway.
Steve Ahlquist, the president of the Humanists of Rhode Island sent Mayor Angel Taveras a letter on Monday, asking that the cross be removed from city property because he believes it violates the Constitution
Mayor Taveras' office tells Eyewitness News in a statement, "Finest Car Wash adopted and has maintained at its expense this median island on Pleasant Valley Parkway for many years. They recently erected this memorial to honor our nation’s veterans and active military, and Mayor Taveras has no plans to ask that it be removed."
The letter sent by the Humanists of Rhode Island threatens to erect an icon of "similar size and visibility" if the cross is not taken down.
