PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island State House will be illuminated orange starting on April 23rd in recognition of Natural Work Zone Awareness Week.

Officials say the orange-lit dome will stand as a reminder to motorists of the importance of driving carefully in work zones.

Nationally, about 700 people die each year in work-related accidents and more than 40,000 injuries are reported. According to reports, eighty-five percent of those who are killed are not workers, but the drivers or occupants of the car that crashed.

“We encourage drivers to be more aware of roadwork and to reduce their speed and obey all signs when encountering a work zone,” RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis said.

He continued, “It’s a reminder for their own safety and that of the men and women working at great risk to keep our roads and bridges in good condition. ”

RIDOT and AAA offer the following suggestions for the coming weeks:

  • Slow down and don’t speed
  • Read signs
  • Do no engage in distracting activities (ex: talking or texting on a phone, checking the GPS, changing radio stations)
  • Merge as soon a possible
  • Expect delays
  • Be patient and stay calm

RIDOT posts maintenance activities and work zones on their website .  RIDOT also uses highway message boards, its Highway Advisory Radio system (1630 AM), and 511 to relay this type of information.
