Political opponent blasts Gordon Fox over dealings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The man challenging Rhode Island House Speaker, Gordon Fox, this November is accusing the Speaker of questionable dealings with a 38 Studios consultant.

During a news conference outside of Curt Schilling's bankrupt company Thursday, Independent candidate, Mark Binder, called for an investigation into campaign support Fox received from tax credit broker and 38 Studios lawyer, Michael Corso.

The Providence Journal reports the House Speaker sent a $648 check to Corso just this week to cover campaign expenses from a fundraiser five years ago at Corso's restaurant, Tazza Cafe.

Fox's campaign says his failure to report was just an oversight.

But Binder says Fox's constituents deserve a better explanation.

"This looks a lot like another case of hidden costs, insider benefits, and poor accounting, which reminds me a lot of the 38 Studios disaster," says Binder.

Fox's spokesperson released a statement to Eyewitness News reading in part, "When it was brought to his attention that there was no indication of the food provided at a fundraising event held more than five years ago... Speaker Fox provided payment earlier this week and will be amending his campaign finance report to reflect that oversight."
