PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI/AP) - Events around the nation, and in Rhode Island, will be held Monday to honor the life of Martin Luther King, Junior. Sunday would have been his 83rd birthday.

A Rhode Island volunteer center is offering training on non-violent strategies for activism in honor of King Jr.

Serve Rhode Island says the training for AmeriCorps volunteers will take place Monday and will focus on how to use non-violent methods to push for social change.

Serve Rhode Island Executive Director Bernie Beaudreau says the training is an opportunity to study King's life and "apply his lessons to our current-day quest for change."

The training will be done by The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence in Providence and held at Providence College.

On Sunday, a civil rights roundtable was held at the Roots Café in Providence. The group looked at how economic issues impact Rhode Island communities, and how Dr. King's teachings can be used to better the community.
