PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Ethics Commission has voted to take a step toward creating a new rule requiring the disclosure by elected officials of out-of-state travel.
The Providence Journal reports the commission voted 6-0 on Tuesday to go ahead with public hearings on the proposed rule change. The commission will also take written comment.
The watchdog group Common Cause in May sent a letter to the commission seeking broader disclosure of gifts, saying it would make government more transparent.
The group says some legislators have taken trips funded by the Senate Presidents' Forum and the American
Legislative Exchange Council and that it's in the public's interest to know about such travel.
The newspaper reports the group's request for toughening disclosure of non-travel-related gifts has been dropped for now.
