PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The trial is underway for a suspected murderer who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend's friend.
Prosecutors say the suspect went to his ex-girlfriends Warwick home in a jealous rage to confront her new boyfriend, but wound up shooting Carl Cunningham to death instead.
Cunningham’s family was in a courtroom on Thursday, so upset they were grasping each other and visibly shaking.
The accused killer, Tony Gonzales, sat emotionless as the trial continued on Thursday.
Prosecutors played a 911 call that cited Gonzalez as the shooter, as well as a text message he had sent to his ex-girlfriend saying he was, “Thirsty for blood and looking for a fight with new boyfriend Matt Chiver.”
It was just more than a year ago that police say Gonzalez went to his ex-girlfriends home looking for a fight with Chiver, but fatally shot and killed Cunningham.
The defense argued during the opening statement that witnesses, including the ex-girlfriend are not credible, and questioned if Matt Chiver saw anything.
Gonzalez is also charged with the attempted murder of Matthew Chiver. He's been held without bail, after refusing a plea deal earlier this month.
