PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Federation of Teachers is denouncing a threat of sanctions by Education Commissioner Deborah Gist.

In a letter sent to Superintendents across the state Friday, Gist outlined severe actions against districts that assign teachers based on seniority and against education policy.

Actions included revoking certifications, withholding state aid and legal action in court.

The Rhode Island Federation responded, saying the letter, "demonstrates a continued lack of respect for professionals, who on the local level, can determine the best way to staff their schools."

The group also adds, state education policy does not supersede collective bargaining rights.
