EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee says the state will lend $200,000 to efforts to turn a closed landfill into a solar energy farm.
Chafee made the announcement Tuesday at the 229-acre former city dump, which closed in 1979.
Officials in East Providence want to turn the location into one of New England's largest solar energy facilities.
The city will use the $200,000 to pay for preparatory work on the project.
If the project is successful the city would pay back the money to the state.
Chafee, an independent, says projects like the proposed solar farm could create jobs and clean energy for the state.
