EPHS flooded after water pipe break

Twenty classrooms in new wing affected

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Classes were canceled once again Friday at East Providence High School, due to cleaning still going on after a water pipe break Thursday. Twenty classrooms suffered damage; on the second floor of the school's new wing, classrooms were covered in two inches' worth of water, which then seeped down to classrooms below and ceiling tiles.

Air quality tests will be done by the Rhode Island Department of Health once cleanup has finished. John DeGoes, the interim school superintendent, said the school will probably reopen Monday.

By Friday morning, DeGoes said the affected rooms had dried out for the most part.

The break wasn't related to Thursday morning's rain and windstorm; problems had been ongoing.

EPHS has had an eventful week. Tuesday, the mother of a student turned herself in to police after she'd allegedly threatened to "shoot up" the school the day before.
