DCYF: Recent SIDS cases preventable

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - There have been three cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in Rhode Island over the past month. State officials say each death was easily preventable.

DCYF The Department of Children Youth and Families says the infants were each in unsafe sleeping situations -- in beds, in cribs, or with other blankets and things in the crib. Officials say simple changes could've saved the children's lives. They're hoping educating new parents on the importance of crib safety will prevent future tragedies.

"The easiest way to remember is ABC: Alone, on the Back, and in a Crib. No bumpers, no blankets," Stephanie Terry, of RIDCYF told Eyewitness News. "It doesn't look as nice, and it doesn't seem as nurturing as fluffy bed pillows and things, but it is the safest way."
