Woman collapses on street after fire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence firefighters battled flames and hot weather at a triple decker early Friday morning.

People who lived in the Althea Street home said they were grateful they made it out of the fire alive. Firefighters revived one woman who passed out on the street shortly after.

“She came out, she was out of the building when we arrived and she just wasn’t feeling good, so the rescue took her to the hospital for precautionary,” said Captain David Soscia of the Providence Fire Department.

The second and third floors were vacant, and everyone on the first floor got out safely around 8 a.m., including one man who was awakened by the smell of the fire.

“It was hard to get out so he climbed to one of the windows because there was too much smoke by the doors, so he climbed out the window,” said Ahleh Thomas, and eyewitness.

Firefighters made sure not to get overheated.

“We bring on extra crews and relieve the crews that are in the building and let the other crews come out and cool down,” said Soscia.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
