Construction underway on Prov. turbine

Providence, R.I. (WPRI) - Work is underway to construct the first of three wind turbines set to overlook Narragansett Bay in Providence.

Crews have alaready assembled the first tower, and work on the blades is now in full swing.

Once completed, each turbine will stand 365-feet tall and eventually help power the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Together the wind turbines will produce around 4.5 megawatts of energy per year, enough to cover 40 percent of the plants energy needs.

The Narragansett Bay Commission in charge of the project, tells us the turbines will reduce the plant's power bill from $2.8 million to about $1.1 million. 

The project is costing the city of Providence $12 million dollars, but officials say the overall savings is well worth it.
