Changing temps provoke pipe problems

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Within a week, Southern New England has cycled between freezing cold and spring-like temperatures.

While it might be nice to have a break from the winter weather, the excessive fluctuations can wreak havoc on plumbing systems at home.

Joe Delicio, General Manager of Roto-Rooter, says that it is actually the thawing-out process that causes pipes to burst. He warns that "when the pipes are frozen, you don't want to wait ... call us."

In the last few weeks alone, businesses, schools, and homes have all experienced a burst pipe. When they break inside of a wall, the damage is especially costly.

With temperatures back in their normal range for winter, here are several ways to protect pipes before it is too late:

• disconnect outside hoses
• shut off valves with inside-to-outside connections
• protect/cover pipes in unheated areas
• let water drip in colder spots
• prevent heat from falling below 60 degrees

Recently, Delicio says his company received between 125 and 175 calls per week.
