PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Brown University has removed Joe Paterno's name from its head football coaching position and a student award named in honor of the former Brown quarterback.

The Providence Journal reports the school had been considering removing Paterno's name from its head coaching chair even before the late Penn State coach's name was linked to the sexual abuse scandal at Penn State.

Brown announced the move Friday on its website. It has also taken Paterno's name off an award given annually to the school's outstanding male freshman athlete. The award was named in honor of Paterno in 1991.

Paterno played for Brown from 1946 to 1949. He graduated from the university in 1950 and is a member of the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame.
