PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) - Brown University has named a new president of the ivy league institution.

Princeton's Christina Hull Paxson will succeed Ruth J. Simmons as the school's 19th president.

Paxson is the dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton.

Ruth Simmons announced her retirement in 2011.

Simmons has been president of Brown since 2000, becoming the first black president of an ivy league institution.

According to Princeton's website, Paxson founded the Center for Health and Wellbeing, an interdisciplinary health research center in the Woodrow Wilson School in 2000.

Paxson is expected to take over as president of Brown University on July 1.
