PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island will receive $12 million in federal funds to repair affordable housing units around the state.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced the grants Friday.

The money will be divided among 25 public housing authorities throughout the state.

Reed says local housing agencies can use the money on improvements like new roofs or windows or on plumbing, electrical and other systems.

Providence will receive $3.45 million of the grant, the largest share.

Rhode Island has about 9,500 affordable housing units.
