PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island lawmaker and a restaurant owner say they've reached a tentative agreement to buy a troubled Providence nightclub.
Rep. Peter Petrarca appeared before the city's Board of Licenses on Monday with Gianfranco Marrocco, owner of Mediterraneo , an Italian restaurant in Providence.
They asked the board to transfer the liquor license of Club Elements to them. The facility has been shut since a violent brawl on New Year's Day. Petrarca says he would impose a strict dress code and would prevent gangs from hanging out there.
But Kevin McHugh, a lawyer for the city, said it was a bad location for a nightclub and a new business shouldn't reopen there.
The board will continue the hearing on Tuesday.
