PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The Rhode Island State House is helping to shine a light on Alzheimer's awareness.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee, joined by members of the RI Alzheimer's Association, gathered on the State House steps to mark "Alzheimer's Action Day".
Many people are wore purple Friday in honor of the event, and the State House will be bathed in purple light to recognize the 25,000 Rhode islanders, and their families, currently struggling with the devastating disease.
In addition, two walks will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Salve Regina University in Newport, and on Sunday, Sept. 30 at Slater Park in Pawtucket, beginning at 9 a.m.
Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia. 35.6 million people are affected around the world with the disease, and it's the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
