Brown sorority bash ends in violence

City gives University OK for similar event anyway

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Administrators at Brown University are promising to have extra security on hand at another sorority sponsored party scheduled to take place Friday Night.

Officials with the Ivy League school told the Providence Board of Licenses it would make sure this weekend's event does not end with the same violence that marred a similar event sanctioned by the University that took place last weekend.

"It was a little out of hand," says Brown student Becky Bass, who was at the party.

Hundreds of students showed up at the event. It was broken up by Providence Police after campus police were unable to calm the unruly crowd.

In one instance, a student actually tried to wrestle a gun away from a Brown University Police Officer. Other students were involved in large fights.

"It was big drama," student Connor Barnhart told Eyewitness News. "I was walking home and saw about 20 police cruisers in the parking lot."
