Owners failed to correct detected problems

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island officials say they have shut down two passenger elevators after the building owners failed to correct problems found during previous inspections.

The state Department of Labor and Training said Wednesday it shut down elevators at 55 Bradford St. in Providence and 641 Bald Hill Road in Warwick.

The state said the elevators weren't shut down earlier because there was no immediate safety threat.

The department issued shut-down notices to the owners of 46 elevators in October because of outstanding violations. As of Monday, only two had failed to comply within the 30-day period.

The owner of the Providence property couldn't be identified. An employee at William H. Harris Furs, at the Warwick address, said they're working to fix the problem and that the elevator isn't used by the public.
